Hanka and Dudek Ciesla grew up in a loving Jewish family in Poland. Their idyllic childhood was abruptly shattered when Germany invaded Poland in 1939. After their family is separated, Hanka passes as a Polish Catholic within Germany, and Dudek is sent to Auschwitz.
